To begin with, Techncial Writing is precisely what the meaning conveys. Writing about the technical aspect of any product is technical writing. Sometimes people get confused by documents like product reviews but a product review is not and cannot be technical writing.
We often end up reading lot of customer documentation. Since we are the final consumers of a lot of product, we end up reading user guides (both print and online), marketing leaflets, and a lot of similar other literature. Of the few documents mentioned above, user guides are a product of pure techncial writing. They are written after considering all the technical writing processes and methodologies. Userguides are arguably the most techncially and logically correct information system that you can find for a particular product.
Other than userguides, there exist a variety of customer documents that are created following pure technical writing principles. I have been a part of the software development industry. I have, therefore, had the opportunity to learn more about the different products that Technical Writing creates.
Today online help systems and online training materials have become very popular. Print media is very powerful but its reach is not as instantanious as the internet. Online Help Manuals and Online Product Guides have become very popular. Such is their popularity, they they have now become an integral part of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
